Severstal supplied steel plates for construction of Ural, a new nuclear-powered ice breaker

On May 25, 2019 a new universal nuclear icebreaker which structures had been manufactured from Severstal steel products was launched at the Baltic Shipyard.

Hot rolled plates were supplied via a distribution network of Severstal Russian Steel division.

This is the second icebreaker of Project 22220 where steel products of Cherepovets Steel Works are used (the plant being a part of Severstal Russian Steel division). In 2016 Severstal Distribution supplied plates for Arktika nuclear icebreaker.

Ural is the second of series-produced Project 22220 nuclear-powered icebreakers which is now being constructed by the Baltic Shipyard under order of State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM. Arktika forerunner icebreaker and Sibir, the first series-produced icebreaker, have been already launched. According to design data, the new vessels will be the biggest and the most powerful nuclear-powered ice-breakers in the world. They will be able to guide convoys of vessels transporting hydrocarbons both through the Northern Sea Route and mouthes of northern rivers by breaking up to 3 meter arctic ice. The design feature of these icebreakers is a dual draft enabling the icebreaker navigation both in deep and shallow waters in river beds.

The Baltic Shipyard is specialized in construction of first rate surface crafts, ice-class vessels with nuclear and diesel-electric power units, as well as floating nuclear power units.
