GHG emissions monitoring is carried out on a different scale: site productions, enterprises and the company as a whole, which provides a high level of detail and makes it possible to quickly track changes in emissions and the effectiveness of the management system.
All emissions of greenhouse gases (СО2, СН4, N2O, PFCs, HFCs, SF6, NF3) are subject to accounting.

Scope 1
Scope 2
Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions data for 2020 differs from that provided in Annual Report 2020 due to minor reduction adjustments following the assurance by Deloitte CIS that was completed in May 2021
The major source of GHG emissions is СО₂ – 27.71 million tonnes and СН₄ – 2.88 million tonnes of CO2e, N₂O emissions make 0.04 million tonnes of CO2e, other GHG emissions (PFC, HFC, SF₆, NF₃) are absent or insignificant.
Severstal’s largest greenhouse gas emissions in 2021 are associated with stationary fuel combustion for power and technological purposes — 13.38 mmt CO₂-eq. (46.4%) and industrial processes 11.96 million tonnes of CO₂-eq. (41.5%), fugitive emissions from coal mining and use of natural gas up to 2.94 million tonnes of CO₂-eq. (10.2%) and emissions from mobile fuel combustion 0.52 million tonnes of CO₂-eq. (1.8%).
The main GHG emitters at Severstal in 2021 are the Cherepovets Steel Mill (25.24 million tonnes of CO₂-eq., or 82.4%), Vorkutaugol (3.56 million tons of CO₂-eq., or 11 .6%), Karelsky Okatysh (1.09 million tons of CO₂-eq., or 3.6%), the rest of the business units account for 0.74 million tonnes of CO₂-eq., or 2.4%.

Carbon intensity of the Company
Global average
In 2021, the emission intensity increased by 0.8% compared to 2020 and reached 2.078 tonnes of СO₂ per tonne of steel. The increase in carbon intensity is mainly due to the increase in the production of cast iron after the commissioning of coke battery No. 11 and blast furnace No. 3
Severstal estimates Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions for all 15 emission categories under the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard. Scope 3 emission data has been independently verified by Deloitte & Touche CIS.

million tonnes of CO2e
In 2021, Scope 3 emissions in the supply chain comprised of as follows:
— Scope 3 Upstream: 7.05 million tonnes of CO₂e, with the majority of emissions (89%) related to purchases of goods and services and fuel and energy related activities (not included in Scope 1, 2);
— Scope 3 Downstream: 7.04 million tonnes of CO₂e; the main share (96%) includes the categories “Processing of sold products” and “Use of sold products”.
