Severstal launches unique project to develop Cherepovets

Alexey Mordashov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of PAO Severstal, has announced the launch of a development project for the city of Cherepovets, where the Cherepovets Steel Mill, the Company’s key asset, is located.

The project will take a radical new approach to the development of the territory. It will involve a comprehensive study of the "DNA of the city" and the needs of its residents, and the creation of an algorithm to help apply the world's best practices in urban planning to specific areas of the city, all with the goal of designing a more comfortable life for the people of Cherepovets.

Alexey Mordashov commented:

"A modern city is more than just infrastructure that supports the life of the community. It is a special environment, and the health and well-being of its inhabitants and the sustainable development of the whole region largely depend on the effectiveness of how it is organised. In the next few years, we plan to develop, finance and implement a project that aims, on the one hand, to dramatically increase the quality of living in Cherepovets, and on the other hand, to unlock the potential of its residents, among whom more than 60,000 people are employees and former employees of Severstal. At the same time, we will ensure the local community feels actively involved in this project, as it is their constructive and substantive proposals that will ensure we create an environment that really works for people.”

Mayor Vadim Germanov made these remarks on Severstal’s plans:

"We are pleased that Severstal shares our desire to improve Cherepovets. By working with leading experts who specialise in creating comfortable urban environments, we will be able to take a fresh look at improving Cherepovets and make our city even more beautiful and more pleasant to live in. I thank Severstal and Alexey Alexandrovich Mordashov personally for helping to implement the Cherepovets development program."

The project is being funded by Severstal and will be implemented jointly with the City Hall of Cherepovets in several stages. Preparatory work in 2022 will be conducted in two parallel streams. The first will be the process of conceptualising how to improve the comfort of living in Cherepovets as a whole. The conceptual vision, which will be developed by leading architectural bureau YAUZAPROEKT, will offer solutions to bring the ten most significant infrastructure development vectors to a level rivalling leading cities both in Russia and abroad.

The second stream, for which the Moscow Center of Urban Studies is responsible, involves the development of an algorithm for making the environment in the urban districts of Cherepovets more comfortable. This will look at the formation of an architectural style, and the identification of spaces for creating points of interest and other aspects. Attention will also be given to the possibility of attracting and supporting the development of small businesses in the urban districts and integrating them into the area in a logical way. Two city districts of Cherepovets will be identified as pilots for the project.

A website has been developed for the project https://gorod.severstal.com to support dialogue with local residents and provide information on the implementation process.
